The Indiana Hoosiers, the reigning National Champion, faced a major challenge from the Northwestern Wildcats in their Big Ten opener on Friday night. Despite being three-touchdown favorites, the Hoosiers found themselves in a close battle, ultimately emerging with a 29-23 win at home.

Indiana had been criticized for its slow starts this season, and those concerns were evident early in the game. The Hoosiers' opening drive was a 15-play, 67-yard march that consumed nearly half of the first quarter. However, the team's offense struggled to capitalize on that momentum, and a drive that seemed destined for points was thwarted by a Northwestern defensive play.

The Hoosiers' offense continued to struggle throughout the first half, and the team suffered a significant blow when running back Turbo Richard was injured late in the half. The injury occurred after a late hit on a play in which Richard had already gone out of bounds, and there was no call on the play. The incident sparked controversy among the Indiana fans at Memorial Stadium.

Despite the challenges, Indiana managed to take a 12-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, thanks in part to Northwestern's struggles on the ground. However, the Wildcats began to find their footing in the second half, and quarterback Aidan Chiles led them to their first score of the game.

Northwestern continued to push the Hoosiers, scoring another touchdown in the fourth quarter and forcing Indiana to respond. The Hoosiers ultimately emerged victorious, but the game was a far cry from the dominant performances that have characterized their season so far.

Indiana will look to regroup next weekend against Rutgers, followed by games against Nebraska and Ohio State on October 17. The team will be eager to put its slow start woes behind it and focus on building momentum in the Big Ten.
