A traveler attempting to circumvent a $100 baggage fee at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, was caught with a concealed knife in her carry-on bag.
The incident occurred during security screening, when a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer spotted what appeared to be a knife on an X-ray machine. According to the TSA, the officer searched the bag and discovered the knife had been taped in place inside the luggage.
The passenger, whose identity has not been released, admitted to attempting to conceal the knife from TSA because she had an upcoming camping trip and did not want to pay the baggage fee. She claimed she did not think TSA would find the knife.
TSA Supervisory Officer Andrew Kasten responded to the scene and called the Dane County Sheriff's Office to report the incident. The woman was cleared to travel after voluntarily surrendering the knife.
Kasten warned travelers against attempting to save money by concealing items, stating that the potential penalties for doing so can be severe. He noted that TSA officers are trained to detect concealed items and that attempting to circumvent security measures can result in fines and other penalties.
