Kevin Rideout, an American missionary who was abducted in Niger more than nine months ago, has been released from captivity. According to Christian missionary organization SIM International, Rideout was kidnapped on October 21 near his home in Niamey, the capital city of Niger.
Rideout, a pilot for North Carolina-based SIM, is reportedly in good health and has been placed into the care of U.S. officials. He will soon be reunited with his wife, Krista, and their children. The family has expressed gratitude to those who have prayed for Rideout's safe return during his captivity.
The circumstances surrounding Rideout's abduction are unclear, although analysts have speculated that it may be connected to Islamic terror groups in the region. Niger has been a hotbed of Islamic terrorism since a military junta overthrew the democratically elected government in 2023, forcing Western nations to abandon their bases in the country.
The release of Rideout comes as Niger continues to grapple with the threat posed by extremist groups such as ISIS-affiliated Islamic State Sahel Province and al Qaeda-affiliated JNIM. These organizations have been responsible for a significant increase in violence in the region, including attacks on civilians and security forces.
Rideout's family has thanked those who have supported them during his captivity, noting that their prayers and support have been a source of comfort to them throughout this difficult time.
