AOC dismisses socialist past as 'Woke 1' era, draws conservative backlash

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has dismissed her and other socialist politicians' far-left rhetoric as a thing of the past, but conservative opposition remains skeptical.

During an appearance on ABC's "This Week," host Jon Karl asked Ocasio-Cortez to comment on Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong's controversial past comments. Hong has faced criticism for statements she made in the past, including calling for Thanksgiving to be canceled and prisons to be abolished. Ocasio-Cortez responded by joking that "Woke 1 was crazy," suggesting that such views are no longer relevant.

However, this attempt at deflection has been met with swift backlash from conservatives. Tim Graham, Executive Editor of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center, argued that politicians should be held accountable for their past statements. He noted that Hong's comments on canceling Thanksgiving and other holidays were not isolated incidents, but rather part of a broader pattern of radical views.

Manhattan Institute Vice President and Pollster Jesse Arm also weighed in on the issue, questioning whether Ocasio-Cortez and her allies have truly renounced their past views. He pointed out that many of the positions they advocated for in the early 2020s remain unrepudiated, including support for sex-change operations for children and open borders.

Arm's comments were echoed by other conservative commentators on social media, who accused Ocasio-Cortez and her allies of attempting to downplay their past radicalism. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for example, said that the left's push for "woke" ideology represented a "war on truth."
