Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana announced on Friday that he would support the nomination of Todd Blanche as attorney general, providing crucial backing for President Donald Trump's pick in the face of opposition from some Republican senators.

Blanche, who is Trump's former personal lawyer, had faced criticism over his role in implementing a nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and granting sweeping IRS audit immunity to the president and his family. His confirmation was initially considered uncertain, but Cassidy's announcement helped secure his position as attorney general.

Cassidy stated on the Senate floor that while Blanche is not perfect, having a Senate-confirmed attorney general is preferable to an acting one who may not effectively lead the Department of Justice under Trump. Despite this, several Republican senators opposed Blanche's confirmation, including Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.

Murkowski expressed concerns over Blanche's connection to the anti-weaponization fund and his role in releasing documents related to the Epstein case. She stated that she did not have confidence that Blanche would be able to check the "worst impulses" of the Trump administration if confirmed.

Collins also raised similar concerns, citing the politicization of the Department of Justice under Blanche's leadership and the erosion of its independence.

Blanche was confirmed as attorney general early Saturday morning as part of a concerted effort by lawmakers to wrap up their work before departing Washington. He will officially replace Pam Bondi in the position.
