Haley Furst, a woman who previously identified as a transgender man and was an atheist, has spoken about her radical change of perspective and her subsequent return to Christianity. Furst, who grew up in Alberta, Canada, a province she described as "the most right-wing" and "conservative leaning" in the country, detailed the culture shock she experienced when she transitioned from a private Christian school to a public high school.
At the public high school, Furst was exposed to conversations about gender liberation and sexual liberation, which were not a part of her previous educational experience. She said that these conversations were not only discussed in class but also between adult teachers and underage students. Furst revealed that this exposure led her to identify as a transgender man for about five or six years, during which time she took male hormones and underwent one transitional surgery.
Furst said that a coworker who read Romans 8:38 to her was the catalyst for her renewed faith in God. She described her journey back to Christianity as a slow and steady process, and said that she now believes in biblical values. Furst is critical of adults who share their sexual identity with children, and believes that early exposure to such conversations can be damaging.
Furst's experiences have led her to question the way that children are being taught about sexual identity and gender. She believes that parents have a difficult task in navigating these issues and keeping their children innocent in a world where such conversations are becoming increasingly common. Furst suggested that these conversations are not age-appropriate for young teenagers, and should be reserved for families to discuss at home.
