The family of Stephen Siller, a FDNY firefighter who lost his life on 9/11, will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks by retracing his steps as he ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel towards the World Trade Center.
Frank Siller and other members of the Siller family will participate in a private walk before joining hundreds of friends and supporters at the FDNY Ten House. The event will conclude the Tunnel to Towers "Steel Across America" tour, which has been traveling across the nation since May. The tour has brought Siller's story and a 21-foot steel beam from the South Tower to communities across the country.
On the morning of 9/11, Siller had just finished his shift with the fire department when he received word that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. He then drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, but it had been closed for security purposes. Undeterred, Siller strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back and ran through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave his life while saving others.
The Tunnel to Towers organization, inspired by Siller's heroism and favorite quote, "While we have time, let us do good," has provided more than 1,700 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to disabled veterans and first responders. The organization has also delivered housing assistance and support services to over 20,000 homeless veterans and holds hundreds of events nationwide to honor America's heroes and preserve the memory of those who lost their lives.
As part of its efforts to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Tunnel to Towers has launched its 343 Homes Initiative, which aims to deliver 343 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to catastrophically injured service members across the country.
