Two Royal Air Force pilots ejected from their training aircraft just moments before it crashed in a fiery explosion in Wales on Wednesday. The incident occurred near the town of Anglesey, after the pilots departed from the RAF Valley base in the northwestern part of the country.
A video taken by a local resident and obtained by a news agency shows the pilots parachuting through the air as a fireball erupted in the Welsh countryside. Both pilots are reportedly in good spirits and are expected to make a full recovery, according to a statement from the Royal Air Force.
A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is now underway, and as a precautionary measure, the RAF has temporarily paused Hawk T1 and Hawk T2 flying operations. The Hawk T2 is a high-performance, two-seat training jet used by the RAF for advanced jet training.
The cause of the crash is not yet clear. The RAF Valley base on Anglesey is home to No 4 Flying Training School, which trains the UK's next generation of fighter pilots for complex tactical environments.
