Israeli investigators have uncovered new details about the alleged plot of a FlyDubai co-pilot to crash a passenger jet into Ben Gurion Airport. According to reports from Saudi and Emirati authorities, Hamam al-Hammami told investigators that he intended to continue FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 towards Israel, obtain necessary clearances to approach the airport, and then crash the aircraft into a building or another plane.
The information reportedly came from investigations into the incident, which occurred last week when al-Hammami allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit. The attack was ultimately thwarted by passengers and others aboard the flight, which was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Two Israeli officials with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters that al-Hammami said during questioning that he had planned the attack before he was hired by FlyDubai. The Omani co-pilot had previously been grounded by Oman Air, according to a report.
The UAE Public Prosecution and FlyDubai have been asked for confirmation of the reported findings, but so far no official comment has been made. The UAE Attorney General has said that the investigation remains underway to determine the full circumstances and motives behind the attack, as well as any potential links to others.
The incident has sparked concerns about aviation security, and Israeli officials have praised the heroic actions of passengers who intervened to prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.
