The Iowa Hawkeyes secured a 20-19 upset victory over No. 18 Michigan on Saturday, with quarterback Hank Brown connecting with Reece Vander Zee for a game-winning 16-yard touchdown as time expired.
The game-winning drive covered 91 yards, with Brown's 29-yard completion to Addison Ostrenga setting up the winning touchdown with two seconds remaining. Brown's performance was aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty against Michigan on third down near midfield.
The win marked a reversal of fortune for the Hawkeyes, who had been trailing 19-14 in the fourth quarter. Michigan's Bryce Underwood had thrown a 49-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan earlier in the quarter, but Iowa took the lead on Brown's 16-yard touchdown pass to Vander Zee.
Iowa's victory came despite a disappointing finish for the Wolverines, who were unable to run the clock out and secure the win. "We would've liked to run the clock out," coach Kyle Whittingham said. "That was disappointing."
The win marked a significant upset for the Hawkeyes, who will look to build momentum on the road against Ohio State next week. Michigan, meanwhile, will seek to regroup on the road against Minnesota.
