Jesus Acosta, a 31-year-old parolee, was taken into custody on Friday after a 48-hour manhunt by police. Acosta was sought in connection with two deadly shootings in New York City, including a robbery at a Bronx deli on Tuesday and another shooting at a Brooklyn restaurant on Sunday.
According to police, Acosta approached a 33-year-old man at the 149 Grill & Deli in the Bronx at around 12:16 a.m. on Tuesday and opened fire, striking the victim multiple times in the chest. The victim, identified as Tayvon Shuler, was taken to the hospital but later died of his injuries. A second shooting occurred on Sunday at American Best Wings & Pizza in Brooklyn, where a 44-year-old man was shot in the head and a 39-year-old man was shot in the leg. The 44-year-old victim was pronounced dead at a hospital, while the surviving victim was listed in stable condition.
The FBI offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Acosta's location and apprehension. Police released surveillance images of Acosta, who had "Bronx" tattooed on his hand and "Bobby" tattooed on his left forearm. He was described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 175 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes.
Acosta had been on parole since April after serving 10 years in state prison for assault and criminal weapon possession. United Bodegas of America, a group that represents bodega owners, thanked the NYPD for taking Acosta into custody but criticized the justice system for his prior record. The group called for changes to curb gun violence and improve bodega safety.
The NYPD did not immediately release additional details about Acosta's arrest, including where he was taken into custody or the charges he faces.
