Minnesota officials have released the identities of the victims involved in Wednesday's Minneapolis apartment shooting. Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61, were the two civilians who died as a result of the shooting. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Spry and Afrah were residents of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
The suspect, Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, opened fire before being fatally struck in an exchange of gunfire with police. A preliminary autopsy indicated that Johnson died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide. The two Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officers injured in the shooting were identified as Joseph Michnowski, a five-year veteran, and Yahye Ahmed, a nearly two-year veteran.
Ahmed was released from a hospital on Thursday, while Michnowski remained hospitalized in the afternoon. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said that one of the injured officers sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, while the other underwent surgery. Another officer involved in the incident was also evaluated for a non-life-threatening injury.
The BCA said that at least one officer discharged his gun during the incident, identifying the officer as Liban Mohamed Ibrahim, a two-year MPD veteran. Investigators are continuing to determine whether any other officers fired their weapons. The shooting began during a domestic child custody exchange involving a woman who previously had a relationship with Johnson, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Johnson was also facing eviction from the apartment building, according to court records obtained by Fox9 Minneapolis. Officials have not determined whether Johnson specifically targeted the victims.
