Tacoma police rescued 60 cats and kittens from a 40-foot sailboat anchored off Owens Beach

A six-day operation by the Tacoma Police Department's Marine Services Unit has resulted in the rescue of 60 cats and kittens from an abandoned sailboat off Owen Beach in Washington. The vessel, a 40-foot sailboat, was reported abandoned on August 6, prompting police to respond.

Upon initial inspection, more than 30 cats were found living in unsafe conditions aboard the boat, many appearing frightened and malnourished. Over the course of the rescue effort, the number of cats removed from the vessel grew to 60, with police coordinating with Animal Control and the department's Forensics Unit to ensure safe removal.

The rescue operation concluded on August 11, with police confirming that all 60 cats had been safely disembarked. However, authorities have warned that there is still a possibility some cats may remain onboard, prompting additional searches under the authority of a search warrant.

Marine Services has begun the process of having the vessel moved, and police are asking members of the public to notify Animal Control if they spot any remaining cats aboard the sailboat. The department has also issued a warning against unauthorized boarding of the vessel, citing complications in their investigation into the owner's identity.

Over 40 of the rescued cats have been taken to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, while the remaining animals are being placed in foster homes in the area.
