A Staten Island deli owner has launched a unique initiative to reward local students for their academic achievements. Wail Alselwi, co-owner and manager of Zack's Finest Deli & Grocery, has been running the "Grades for Grabs" program for the past three years, where students with good report cards can receive cash, snacks, and school supplies.
The program began as a simple bet between Alselwi and a local student named Zameir Davis, who would receive a milkshake if he achieved good grades. However, it has since grown into a large-scale effort, with thousands of students visiting the deli to show off their report cards and receive rewards. Students with high marks can walk out with up to $100 in cash, along with snacks and school supplies.
The program has gained significant attention on social media, with videos of students and their parents discussing the initiative drawing millions of views. Supporters across the country have also contributed to the program through a GoFundMe, which has raised over $575,000 towards its $650,000 goal.
Alselwi has stated his ambition to expand the program nationwide, with plans to take it to every city in the United States. He credits his brother with motivating him to start the program, which he initiated during a difficult period in his life.
The program has been praised by parents and students alike, with many bringing their children from different states and even Canada to participate.
