Eric Lewis, 35, was arraigned on Sunday morning on 76 charges related to the ambush killing of a Philadelphia police officer. The charges include murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder, and aggravated assault, among others. Lewis was ordered held without bail and his next court date is scheduled for October 26.
The charges stem from a shooting on Saturday that killed Officer Shane Seiber, 40, and left his partner wounded. Seiber was a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and an Air Force veteran. He is survived by his wife and two young children. The wounded officer, who is a father of five, was initially listed in critical condition but has since been listed in stable condition.
According to police, the shooting unfolded around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday when two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun. The officers located the armed man on a porch, but then came under "significant gunfire" after reaching the porch. Additional officers and a SWAT team arrived and found both officers on the porch suffering from gunshot wounds.
Lewis was eventually taken into custody after a barricade situation was declared. Police said he was found in possession of two handguns and a shotgun, including one handgun that belonged to the officer wounded in the attack. District Attorney Larry Krasner declined to say how Lewis obtained the firearms or whether he had fired the officer's handgun.
