A deadly shooting inside a North Carolina family home prompted a multi-state manhunt that ended in a violent confrontation hundreds of miles away. Gaston County Police officers responded to a home on Forbes Road at approximately 8:43 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of gunfire inside the residence. Upon arrival, they found four people suffering from gunshot wounds, with two pronounced dead at the scene and two others rushed to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The victims who were killed have been identified as Victoria "Heather" Moore, 50, and Megan "Josiah" Bumgardner, 38. The two surviving victims remained in critical but stable condition as of Friday, according to police. Detectives identified Camryn Moore, 26, and Cory Armstrong, 29, as suspects in the shooting, and obtained warrants charging each of them with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Police believed that everyone involved in the shooting knew each other and described the incident as isolated with no continuing threat to the Gaston County community. However, the motive behind the violence remains unclear. Camryn Moore and Armstrong allegedly fled Gaston County immediately after the shooting, prompting a search that spanned multiple states.
The search reached Ohio at approximately 8 a.m. Friday, when state troopers spotted the suspects' vehicle and attempted to pull it over. However, Moore and Armstrong allegedly refused to stop, leading to a multi-county pursuit that ended in a crash. According to Ohio authorities, officers then reported hearing two gunshots coming from the wrecked vehicle, and a drone was deployed to investigate. The two suspects were found dead inside the vehicle.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the pursuit, crash, and deaths, while the Gaston County Police Department continues its investigation into the shooting. Neighbors in Gastonia expressed shock and sadness over the violence that shattered their normally peaceful street.
