A massive emergency response is underway at Miami International Airport after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway and caught fire while landing around 2 p.m. local time.
According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials, Prime Air flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300, overran the airport's diagonal runway and is currently disabled at the northwest end of the airport. Airport officials confirmed that multiple vehicles were struck by the plane, and more than 60 fire units have been dispatched to the scene.
Fire officials reported that the airplane caught fire following the crash, with heavy flames and smoke visible. Firefighters are working to extinguish the fire and assess the condition of multiple patients who were on the scene. However, authorities have not yet released details on injuries or fatalities.
The FAA has issued a ground stop at Miami International Airport, which is expected to remain in effect until at least 4:30 p.m. All runways and taxiways at the airport are currently closed, and travelers can expect significant delays and potential cancellations.
The FAA will investigate the incident, and Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has confirmed that first responders are assessing the scene.
