A Massachusetts woman accused of killing her two children has had her request to be released on bail or have charges dismissed denied by a judge.
The case against Janette MacAusland, 49, is ongoing, with prosecutors still awaiting the official determination of the cause and manner of death of her 7-year-old son, Kai, and 6-year-old daughter, Ella. The children were found dead in their family's home in Wellesley in April after police conducted a welfare check. MacAusland's defense attorney, Joseph Krowski, argued that the case should be dismissed or that his client should be released on bail, but a judge refused to grant either request.
MacAusland is being held without bail as the investigation continues. Prosecutors have not announced any defense of postpartum psychosis or insanity, unlike in the case of Lindsay Clancy, who was also accused of killing her children but had her trial end in a mistrial.
MacAusland was arrested in Bennington, Vermont, after arriving at a relative's home with a reported bloody neck wound. An arrest affidavit alleges that MacAusland confessed to killing the children and attempted to take her own life. Her husband had filed for divorce months before the killings, seeking custody of their two children.
The case is still in its early stages, with prosecutors awaiting the findings of the medical examiner's office.
