Canadian officials have confirmed fatalities and injuries following a serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. The incident, which sparked a major fire, occurred on Saturday at one of the country's busiest military bases.

Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the incident, but did not immediately specify the number of people killed or injured. "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," McGuinty told reporters.

The fire was still burning on Saturday evening, with McGuinty describing it as one of the most serious incidents to occur at the base in recent memory. The municipality of Wainwright reported that the fire had spread beyond the military base's perimeter into the surrounding area, but no evacuation orders had been issued.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have both addressed the incident, expressing their thoughts and condolences to those affected. The Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and local emergency personnel are responding to the incident, with support being mobilized from across the federal government.

The cause of the incident is not yet clear, and officials are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located approximately 130 miles east of Edmonton and had a population of approximately 1,310 military and civilian personnel in 2021.
