A California man and his 12-year-old nephew have gone missing during a fishing trip off the coast of Mexico.
Oscar Ulloa and his nephew were reported missing in the Sea of Cortez near San Felipe, Baja California, according to a Facebook post from Ulloa's cousin, Alistair Barradell. The pair had gone out for a fishing trip on Saturday, October 10, but have not been heard from since, according to reports.
The disappearance occurred as Tropical Storm Rachel brought dangerous weather to the region. Barradell said the family is hoping for their safe return and is asking people who have been fishing or traveling in the area to share any information that could help.
A search is underway by air and sea, with Mexican authorities working to locate the missing boat. The Mexican coast guard is conducting aerial searches, and the family has also hired a private plane to assist in the search effort. Authorities have deployed six units and a specialized search aircraft, covering an area of over 9,900 square nautical miles.
Crews have reportedly spotted a cooler and life jacket during the search, but it is not clear whether these items are connected to the missing boat. The family is asking people around the Sea of Cortez to remain on the lookout, and any information that could aid in the search is being sought.
