Kyle Larson's night started with a NASCAR Cup Series event in Richmond, Virginia, but he managed to make it to Knoxville Raceway early Sunday morning thanks to a three-hour rain delay and a fast jet. The Elk Grove, California native led all 50 laps to claim the top prize of $200,000 at the 65th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey's.
Larson's total earnings for the week topped $212,000, including his preliminary win, pole position award, and a special award worth $10,000. This was his sixteenth career win at the "Sprint Car Capital of the World" and his fourth Nationals victory in six years.
Although Larson missed A main hot laps, he arrived from Richmond before the 22-lap B main started. He took the lead on the first lap and maintained it throughout the event, with Sheldon Haudenschild, Kasey Kahne, James McFadden, and Buddy Kofoid trailing behind him.
Larson's victory was a result of his strong driving skills, as well as the expertise of his car owner, Paul Silva. In an interview, Larson praised Silva for his ability to read the car and make adjustments that helped Larson run smoothly throughout the event.
"It's extremely surreal," Larson said in Victory Lane. "It was a range of emotions, but I'm just grateful to be here tonight."
