A 36-year-old mother of two has died while attempting to rescue her sons from a strong current while snorkeling in the Bahamas. Leanne Gregory, of Nottinghamshire, England, was snorkeling with her husband and two sons on North Bimini Island when the incident occurred.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the children were swept away by a strong current, and in an attempt to rescue them, Gregory was also swept away. She was later rescued and transported to the ferry dock, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered. Despite efforts to save her life, Gregory was pronounced dead by a local doctor.
Both of Gregory's sons survived the incident, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time.
Gregory's husband, Nathan, has paid tribute to his wife on social media, describing her as his "childhood sweetheart" and "soulmate". He said that she had held onto one of their sons until he was rescued, but she did not have the energy to save herself. Gregory's mother-in-law, Kim Jones, also spoke out about the tragedy, saying that the couple were school sweethearts who had been together for over 20 years.
The incident is the latest in a series of recent vacation tragedies, including the death of a Minnesota pastor who fell into a pool aboard a cruise ship in Italy, and a Brazilian university official who was killed by falling roofing material while touring a historic landmark in Arizona.
