A 24-year-old French travel influencer, Emma Marie Laurent, was killed in a river crossing accident in Nicaragua. Laurent was one of three women who died when a pickup truck carrying a group of travelers was swept away by strong currents in the Nahualapa River.
The incident occurred on October 9, at around 1 a.m., in the northwestern department of Chinandega, as the group attempted to cross the river. Recent heavy rainfall had caused the river to rise, creating hazardous conditions. The driver, Martin Gerardo García Girón, a Mexican national, reportedly stepped out of the vehicle to assess the water level before attempting the crossing.
The water came close to the driver's knees, but the current proved too powerful, sweeping the pickup away and causing it to overturn. The driver survived, but the circumstances surrounding the crossing are under investigation by authorities. Nicaraguan co-President Rosario Murillo offered condolences to the victims' families, warning about the dangers of crossing rivers during the country's rainy season.
Laurent, who had developed an online following by sharing her travels around the world, had nearly 43,000 followers on Instagram. Her final social media post, uploaded on October 2, reflected on the importance of appreciating everyday moments. Following news of her death, social media users left messages of remembrance beneath the post.
Murillo expressed solidarity with the victims' families, urging people to remain vigilant in the face of such tragedies. She also highlighted the dangers of underestimating the power of rivers during the rainy season.
