Southwest Airlines passenger dies aboard LAX flight, cause deferred

A 22-year-old man has been identified as the victim of a sudden medical emergency that occurred on a Southwest Airlines flight from Dallas to Los Angeles. Rain McMillan Walmsey was declared dead at the scene after becoming unresponsive during the flight, which landed at Los Angeles International Airport.

According to newly released records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office, the investigation into Walmsey's death remains open and the cause of his death is still pending additional investigation. The medical examiner listed Walmsey's place of death as "LAX Southwest plane," but no manner of death has been determined.

Walmsey became unresponsive after experiencing a medical emergency while Flight 958 was en route to Los Angeles, law enforcement sources told NBC Los Angeles. Crew members attempted to revive him using CPR, and paramedics responded when the flight arrived at LAX. Despite their efforts, Walmsey could not be revived.

Southwest Airlines confirmed that a "medical incident involving a customer" occurred aboard Flight 958 on Friday but declined to provide further details, referring questions to local authorities. The airline has not commented on the specific circumstances surrounding Walmsey's death.

The incident follows several other recent cases in which passengers have suffered fatal medical emergencies during commercial flights.
