A charter flight carrying eight people crashed while approaching a remote site in western Alaska on Thursday, officials said.
The plane, operated by Security Aviation, was en route from Anchorage to Cape Newenham, located approximately 40 miles south of Goodnews Bay. The twin-engine Cessna took off from Anchorage and is believed to have crashed early Thursday afternoon while approaching the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site.
According to Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board's Alaska region chief, two pilots and six passengers were on board the plane. However, Johnson did not immediately have information on their conditions following the crash.
The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center launched a search-and-rescue mission after receiving a report of an "aircraft incident" near Cape Newenham. The U.S. Coast Guard, NTSB, and Alaska State Troopers are among those responding to the site.
Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, offered condolences on X, noting her personal experience flying with Security Aviation.
