The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released preliminary findings on the cause of Sunday's deadly plane crash at Miami International Airport, which involved an Amazon cargo jet that overran the runway and struck two vehicles, killing five people.
According to the NTSB, key braking systems on the aircraft did not deploy during the crash. While the wheel brakes were applied, the speed brakes and thrust reversers, which are designed to slow the plane down quickly, did not activate. The NTSB investigator in charge, Chihoon Shin, said there was "no indication in the recorded data that speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed."
Shin emphasized that investigators will need to interview the pilots involved in the crash to gain a better understanding of what happened. He said officials are not yet speculating about what should have happened during the landing, but rather want to gather more information before drawing conclusions.
The NTSB has confirmed that the captain of the plane was 55 years old and had 7,145 flight hours, while the first officer was 37 years old and had 2,655 flight hours. The plane was carrying a cargo of contact lenses, weighing 32,222 pounds, as well as a flight kit. No hazardous materials were on board.
The crash occurred on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuring another five. The victims included seven people who were in a van that was crushed on airport property. The plane then traveled through the airport fence and struck another civilian vehicle before coming to a stop near a parking lot.
