The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a contract buyout with guard Klay Thompson, clearing the way for him to sign with the Miami Heat, according to ESPN.
Thompson, a 36-year-old four-time NBA champion and five-time All-Star, was scheduled to make $17.5 million in the final season of his contract with the Mavericks. He will reportedly ink a two-year contract worth nearly $13 million with the Heat, sources told ESPN.
Thompson spent the past two seasons with the Mavericks, averaging 12.9 points in 141 regular-season games. Before joining the Mavericks in 2023, he played 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors. The 36-year-old has long been regarded as one of the NBA's premier 3-point shooters.
The Heat are building around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, and Thompson's arrival would give them another proven perimeter threat. Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri praised Thompson's impact during his time with the Mavericks, saying, "Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization."
Thompson has had a notable career, including two back-to-back seasons sidelined due to an Achilles injury. The Mavericks struggled to a 26-56 record in the 2025-26 season, leading to the departure of head coach Jason Kidd, who left after five seasons in a mutual decision.
