A transit worker was killed in a daytime attack outside a train station in Chicago, allegedly at the hands of a suspect who had been on electronic monitoring despite repeated probation violations.
Chevazz Campbell, 37, is accused of stabbing and killing Julian Mobley, a 41-year-old husband and father who worked as a janitor for the Chicago Transit Authority. The incident occurred at the Damen Green Line station just before 3 p.m. on Thursday.
According to authorities, Campbell allegedly entered the station through the gate without paying and got into an argument with Mobley. The suspect then allegedly sprayed Mobley in the face twice with mace before stabbing him in the neck.
Campbell was on electronic monitoring at the time of the attack, and prosecutors said he had at least four probation violations filed against him for curfew violations. Chicago Police confirmed that Campbell also allegedly robbed the victim and was arrested hours after the attack.
The Amalgamated Transit Union has issued a statement praising Mobley as a hero who died trying to stop an attack on a fellow member. Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke and the union have also called for a permanent legislative solution to address the problems with the electronic monitoring system.
