North Dakota mom stabs her 2 children to death in 'horrific' killing that left cops traumatized: officials

A 22-year-old North Dakota mother has been accused of stabbing her two young children to death in a violent attack that left police officers traumatized by the scene.

According to authorities, Kailey Erhart allegedly killed her 5-month-old and 3-year-old children on Thursday after waving a gun at her estranged husband and threatening to harm herself. Her 1-year-old child survived the attack but suffered serious injuries and underwent surgery.

The crime scene was described as "horrific" by Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler, who said it was one of the most disturbing things his officers had ever seen. He praised their response to the incident, saying they came through in a difficult situation with professionalism and compassion.

Erhart's husband had been at home with the children when police were alerted to her threats. Earlier that day, she allegedly threatened him with a gun she had recently purchased, but he was able to disarm her during a physical struggle. Erhart faces nine charges, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and multiple counts of aggravated assault and terrorizing.

A judge has set Erhart's cash bond at $3 million, citing the extreme violence in the alleged charges and the threat she poses to the community, victims, and children.
