A New York City Police Department detective has been released from the hospital after being stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx last week.

Detective Jose Mercedes was wheeled out of Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday, but made a notable recovery by standing up in front of a group of clapping officers. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch was present and praised Mercedes' determination and strength.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when two suspects on an e-bike attempted to steal Mercedes' gold chain as he was clearing out the trunk of his car in the Norwood neighborhood. Mercedes attempted to fight back, but was stabbed and slashed seven times before the assailants fled. He then pursued the attackers on foot for about two blocks before collapsing.

Tisch and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had visited Mercedes in the hospital shortly after the attack, with the mayor expressing hope for his quick and complete recovery. The two attackers remain at large, according to police.

The entire NYPD department has expressed support for Mercedes as he continues his recovery, with Tisch stating that the department will "relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime".
